Pizza, Pizza!

Ahhh. This was such a delicious, fast and easy vegan pizza. It hit the spot!

Miss Heather discussed her love of La Tortilla factory wraps the other day, and I completely concur. They’re high in soluble fiber, made with oat bran, and taste delicious!! I was getting ready to make a wrap when a craving hit.

HOT. PIZZA. Without dairy, pizza just doesn’t happen as often. I bought some nutritional yeast the other day and have been brainstorming uses-tonight one came to fruition.

Hummus+nutritional yeast… pizza topper?? Well here’s how the whole thing came together:

  • I heated up a La Tortilla factory whole wheat wrap in a large, non-stick skillet.
  • Mix 2-4 tbsp tomato paste (depending on how saucy you like it!!) with garlic powder and oregano.
  • Spread tomato mixture on heated wrap then top with steamed black eyed peas. (I like these because they add protein and fiber… they make it a little more hearty. If you’d like you could use shredded chicken or crumbled (seasoned) tofu.
  • Sprinkle hot pepper flakes (optional), add desired veggies (cooked mushrooms, roasted red peppers, artichokes, olives, cooked onions… whatever you desire.)
  • Mix together 2 to 3 tbsp hummus (original will do) with 2 to 3 tbsp nutritional yeast. Add a pinch of turmeric for color and thin with water (up to 1 tbsp)
  • Spread the “cheeze” on top of your pizza (still cooking in the pan)
  • Top with fresh basil and halved grape tomatoes, if desired.
  • Drizzle with tahini, then sprinkle paprika unevenly so it looks authentic.
  • Place pan under broiler and broil until the corners of the wrap turn golden brown.
  • Let rest a minute or two, then transfer to a cutting board and slice with a sharp knife.

Because it cooks from both the top and bottom, the pizza doesn’t get soggy. (cooking the veggies and using tomato paste instead of sauce helps too.) The combination of hummus, nutritional yeast and tahini actually taste like cheese!!

I’m sure it would work with other wraps, too!

Give it a try… I’ll be eating this every day for the rest of my life.

Wow Mae, never heard of hummus and nut. yeast as a topping…but i guess if it can go in a wrap or on a sandwich, it can go on pizza. Nice post!

What is the deal with nutritional yeast? I have Super Baby food for my almost 1 yr old and she talks about it but I’ve never heard about it in my life!

pizza looks awesome! found you via HEAB!

I’ve been craving bread/ pizza lately YUM

I clicked through to this post from Heather’s so I could see the details of your pizza idea. I love it! I’m a big fan of tortilla pizzas myself. My go-to crust is Rudi’s Organic Whole Spelt Tortillas. 5 minutes under the broiler and it’s perfectly browned and crispy every time. I have tried hummus on my tortilla pizzas but I never thought to mix it with the nooch–that is brilliant! It must be really good and cheezy! Well done, want to try, stat. 🙂

Yum! I must make this very soon! The hummus-cheese sounds tastily intriguging.

That sounds super yummy! I make up a “cheesy” vegan pasta sauce for mac n “cheese” using nutritional yeast as well – hemp or coconut milk, nutritional yeast, tahini, dijon mustard, maybe a little garlic powder = yummy mac n cheese!

Hello Mae! I wandered over her courtesy of your new fan, HEABS! Yay! I have a question: Do you think that you can make a cheeze sauce from just yeast and water or milk or yogurt? Does your sauce melt? Or is it already kinda melty? Thanks!

  9. January 26, 2010 8:34 am

OMG that looks amazing! I want to go buy nutritional yeast immediately. Any suggestions for good brands?

Hi Mae. Love your blog. Found you through HEAB’s mentions. I was wondering if in your studies of food science, do you know the effects of nutritional yeast on the gut, specifically pertaining to those with inflammatory bowel disease?

Just tried out the pizza cheese (1 tbsp nutritional yeast, 1 tbsp hummus, 1/2 tsp tahini, splash of water) as a sandwich spread and it was delicious!

  12. January 27, 2010 1:08 am

I can’t wait to try this. I have been trying to think of a way to make hummus the “cheese” on my pizza. This sounds so good!

  13. January 27, 2010 5:00 am

Oh my! (Ohh May!) That is the most deliciously looking and sounding pizza I have ever seen! Right up my alley! Nice! Thank you for being so darn creative! I love nutritional yeast and it’s wondrous possibilities!

  14. January 27, 2010 9:15 pm

I’m vegan and I love hummus so this would be a perfect “cheese” for me to use! Thanks so much for sharing your genius 🙂

  15. January 28, 2010 10:32 pm

I saw this on HEAB’s and made a version of my own last night! So good! I am a little afraid of nutritional yeast since I had a bad experience with it before, but I really want to try it again! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Mae! I just tried your pizza cheese today (I trust HEAB’s judgment on this stuff!) and I loved it! So delicious. Thank you for your creation 🙂

  19. March 2, 2010 11:53 pm

I love this Cheezy sauce, I’ll literally put it on ANYTHING!

  20. March 11, 2010 1:56 pm

Wowsers what a great idea for a pizza topper. My girlfriend also suggested satay sauce for pizza the other day which I thought was ingenious 🙂

    • March 12, 2010 1:09 am

Thank you!! Satay sauce sounds gooood 🙂

  21. March 18, 2010 6:36 am

Made this a few weeks ago and it was amazing!
My son is vegan and I have a soy allergy (and am veg for 20+ years) so I made homemade dough and your hummus, nutritional yeast, tahini pizza and it was FABulous! Thank you so much!

I’m flexitarian. I made this tonight and I have to say it’s pretty damn impressive for a cheese-less pizza. Will make again!
