The Ugly Rooster Cafe

October 29, 2009

Located at 159 North Main Street, The Ugly Rooster is the newest addition to the Mechanicville dining scene (which also includes and is limited to: McDonald’s, Subway, Dunkin Donuts, and Faldoni’s) It’s predecessors, Tratorria Something-or-other, Debbie’s, Penny’s, and about a million others, have all unfortunately folded. The newest corner café felt very similar to Penny’s for me, but the menu was much more original and creative. It included things like Italian French toast with Mascarpone, orange zest, and chocolate shavings, Sticky Bun French toast, Crab Benedict Omelet, Breakfast and lunch burritos, and a variety of Breakfast or lunch sandwiches and Panini.

I ordered the breakfast plate with 2 eggs over easy, rye toast, home fries and a side of fresh fruit. A simple, quite difficult to mess up. The fruit came out fist and was the only component of the meal that disappointed me a little. Though it wasn’t from a can, it wasn’t fantastic. There was a grape, a couple pieces of melon and pineapple in either a sugar syrup or fruit juice. It wasn’t bad, but probably not even worth $3. My Grandma ordered the Italian French Toast, and when our meals came out I was very impressed. Rarely do restaurants customize orders correctly but I was pleased to find delicious dairy-free home fries and crunchy rye toast without any butter slathered about. The eggs were cooked to perfection and I was even asked if I would like hot sauce with my meal. Yes, please!! Without the butter, the home fries weren’t at all greasy, but seasoned perfectly and tasted fantastic. The toast was very nice, something easy to mess up if you cheap out and order generic processed breads instead of fresh ones. My Grandmother was very pleased with her French toast, and the portions were incredibly generous for the price. The total bill came in just over $13, which was pleasantly low. The service was cheerful and friendly. Overall, I would give this restaurant an A. It’s a neat little gem right in town.
