Beanyes

February 26, 2010

Hello everyone!! Happy Thursday, just one more day until the weekend loading up and selling peanut butter in the middle of a “snowicane”. The weather men have been using the term snowicane for the weekend ahead, but honestly I don’t believe it. Right now it’s just raining.

I have a really fun and pretty post planned for tomorrow, (well actually it’s a guest post but I’ll link to it) so today is another crazy concoction.

Since reading In Defense of Food, I’ve been thinking a lot more about whole foods. (I did take things away from it!) There’s no proof that a certain amount of protein is required each day, and no definitive ratio. Jay Robb is really expensive and I’ve been thinking it may be time to try some smoothie recipes without it.

Those left me quite hungry (without yogurt or soymilk, there isn’t much else but quick fruity carbs!). I thought for a little while and finally decided to experiment with some…

…legumes.

Bean-yes indeed!! I’m not crazy- there are tons of black bean brownie recipes around and even chickpea blondies. So why not chocolate black bean shakes?

Well, Chocolate Black Bean Cheesecake Ice Cream to be even more precise, but you can play around with the ingredients to accommodate your own likes + dislikes.

Chocolate Black Bean Cheesecake Ice Cream

  • 4 cubes ice
  • 2 cubes (about 1/4-1/3) frozen banana

Crush, crush, crush…

  • 1/4 cup kabocha or buttercup squash
  • 1 scoop Chocolate Amazing Grass
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 heaping teaspoon nutritional yeast
  • 1/3 cup drained and rinsed black beans
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp instant coffee (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp xanthen gum+ 1/6 tsp guar gum

Blend everything together and enjoy!

FYI, I don’t have a Vita Mix blender. Until Christmas, I had a 18 year old blender with a crack. One of my gifts was the Oster 6812-00, which runs from $40-$45. If you’re looking for a blender on a budget, I highly recommend this one!

What I like:

  • The carafe comes apart, so you can clean the base, blade and glass jar separately.
  • The “Ice Crush” is really powerful!!
  • It doesn’t have a problem blending my thick smoothies/ice cream as long as you push down the ingredients ever so often.
  • You can even use it to make nut butter
  • It’s inexpensive compared to other models and performs like a champ!

What I don’t like:

  • For smoothies, the blender forms a bubble right on top of the blade so the ingredients don’t circulate down. You have to manually “pop” it and push everything into the blade.
  • It doesn’t work so well for hummus, or really thick things like banana whip [aka it doesn’t replace my beloved food processor. That was also a gift!]

Tips:

  • To make protein cheesecake ice cream, black bean shakes (!), Joeshakes, or ChocoJaynana whip:
  • CRUSH the ice and frozen ingredients first.
  • THEN add the semi solid ingredients (squash, fresh fruit, beans) + liquid and blend.
  • THEN add the powder ingredients and blend for another 30 seconds or so.
  • IF you’re adding spinach, or another leafy green, I recommend blending this up with a little liquid FIRST, pouring it into a glass, then using it as a liquid ingredient.
  • USE as many frozen things as possible to keep your shake really thick and creamy
  • ADD something like bananas or squash (with soluble fiber) to add creaminess
  • DON’T be afraid of guar or xanthen gum! They really can thicken up a smoothie. I decided I like xanthen gum much more than guar gum.
  • STIR, scrape, and push down ingredients with a PLASTIC SPOON and the blender OFF.  Haha I’ve gotten metal shards in my smoothie before. Nice, right?

Remember: frozen crush before semi-solid ingredients.

Like beans. ;-)

Teaser for tomorrow:

marsh1

I spent wayyy to much time in the kitchen yesterday getting this recipe just right [and consuming the failures. heh, heh…]

I can’t wait to share it!!! 😀

If at anytime my blog is offensive in any way, please don’t hesitate in sending me an e-mail. I love you guys and don’t want anyone to be hurt by anything I say!! 🙂

Question for today: What’s your favorite kitchen appliance? (You can only chose ONE!)

I’m pretty addicted to my microwave – it heats up every cup of water I need for hot tea, is crucial for my nightly popcorn and allows me to make huge dishes so that there are leftovers for my hubby when I’m at work.
I dunno what the teaser is, but it looks like marshmallowy goodness! I can’t wait to find out what it is 🙂

I love my food proc! But I so couldn’t live without a microwave; how else would I live without oats?
I’ve never taken a protein supp even when I felt like it couldn’t hurt. I guess you just got to trust it will all “work out” in the end? I agree it’s harder if you cut things like soy, dairy, or meat out of your diet, but even then, it’s amazing what some people DO live off of in random countries, so expensive powders have never seemed worth it

  3. February 26, 2010 7:37 am

Love my mini food processor! I make so much stuff in it, chop veggies in it, etc. Love it!

  4. February 26, 2010 7:50 am

I am definitely checking back tomorrow to see what that beautiful square of deliciousness is! Also, LOVE the name. I never rmunderstoo the beaNO thing before.

I need to try this recipe. 🙂 I’ve been seeing “cheesecake” smoothies cropping up all over the food blogging place and they really look scrumptious.

At boarding school my favorite appliance is my blender. It’s a hand-held blender that looks scary but is great! It’s so easy to clean and you just push down with the blade so no need to get a spoon to mix things up (you can mix right with the blade but pushing it up and down)…I can make raw soups, salad dressings and tons of desserts and drinks with it… ❤

  6. February 26, 2010 8:20 am

This is the blender I have, btw. It’s pretty “cheap” in comparison to lots of blenders (ie. Vitas) too:

  7. February 26, 2010 8:26 am

I love beans – another great recipe to try. Thanks for posting the tips too – super helpful. I have an oster also. My favorite appliance is the food processor!

You only got rain!? Come to downstate NY. We got a snowicane! My town is up to 17 inches and it’s still snowing!

  9. February 26, 2010 9:09 am

This was a very helpful post since I’m a newbie at making shakes/smoothies. Thanks for all the hints! 🙂

I’m always so impressed by the amazing things you whip up! Tomorrow’s creation looks especially mouthwatering 🙂 Glad you’re enjoying In Defense of Food…it’s a great message!

  12. February 26, 2010 11:18 am

Mae, I’m looking at the ingredients in the creation…and I’m just not sure. But I trust your creations because I know you are a food genius!

My fave kitchen appliance is my Ninja!

Girl, there’s no need to defend your bean smoothie, I thought it was brilliant 😀 Can’t wait to see the new recipe!

My favorite appliance would have to be my blender (vita-mix!) I love the gums too- have you ever experimented with locust bean gum/any others? My store sells locust bean and arabica but I’m not sure if they’d do the job right

    • February 28, 2010 7:52 am

I’ve seen some new ones at the co-op and I’m thinking of grabbing an ounce of each one (in bulk) and experimenting. I love thickening agents- SO. Much. FUN!

  14. February 26, 2010 1:45 pm

I saw a recipe for a green smoothie with beans a while ago and forgot about it. thanks for the reminder!
my fave appliance was my magic bullet until yesterday, when I got my vita mix!

  15. February 26, 2010 9:02 pm

I don’t think I should be allowed to post here since I never have time to use food appliances. Can I just admire your work? 🙂

  16. February 26, 2010 10:54 pm

Great smoothie tips girl!!! But beans in a smoothie? Hm. Sounds odd but then again, so does spinach in a smoothie and it’s fabulous. I guess everything is worth a shot.

That looks like a marshmallow?! can’t wait to find out!

My favorite kitchen appliance.. coffee maker with the blender a close second.

    • February 28, 2010 7:49 am

Ooooh coffee maker is a good one! I love my espresso maker- it was a Craig’s List treasure (though I feared my life going to pick it up!)

  17. February 27, 2010 12:32 am

BY FAR my favorite kitchen appliance is my Blendtec blender! I LOVE my baby! Best purchase I have ever made, hands down. I use it every day, at least once a day. 🙂

Anyway, I love beans in my smoothies! I actually use them a lot because they add tons of fiber, protein, and bulk. Not to mention nutrients. I’m not much of a meat person so beans are a staple in my diet. Oooh and they definitely keep you full when in my morning green smoothie.

Can’t wait to read about that delicious looking cake thing you have posted up there! Yum!

    • February 28, 2010 7:48 am

I’m so jealous! I can only start to imagine the concoctions that are possible in a vita or blendtec. I introduced my school to “Will It Blend?” and now we watch it in every class, whenever we want to waste time. hahaha Search it on Youtube!

  18. February 27, 2010 4:21 am

You are so creative and I am excited for tomorrows post!

  19. February 27, 2010 4:24 am

Oh whoa! such a creative idea~~ that looks so smooth and creamy 😀 very comforting!!!! haha

    have a great weekend sweetie!

    Dear Mae,

I think your blog is very offensive. Chocolate Black Bean Cheesecake Ice Cream upsets me very much. How dare you!

    -Rebecca

    p.s. I ❤ you!

  21. February 27, 2010 8:04 pm

I have the same blender! I always just thought it was a piece of crap, but your tips make a lot of sense so I’ll have whip up a smoothie today 🙂

PS–I once used a wooden spoon to mush down the stuff in the blender….while it was still on. I was drinking splinters that day. Aweeesome.

    • February 28, 2010 7:47 am

Another thing I really like about [our] blender is the shape of the carafe… It creates more of a vortex. Bahahhaa and I’m cracking up at the wooden spoon story!

  22. February 28, 2010 1:07 am

Ohhhh that mystery treat looks so so good. And I love your latest black bean concoction!! Thanks for all the tips! I don’t have a Vitamix either and I always wonder how effective a regular old blender would be.
    Have a fantastic Saturday!
