My Ankle: Part 2

Continued from “My Ankle: Part 1”.

After the race, I couldn’t put pressure on my foot at all. I  had intense pain on the outside of my left foot and my coach thought it was a 5th metatarsal stress fracture. I went to the orthopedist, had an x-ray done (which wouldn’t have picked up a stress fracture anyway. Reason #134 I hated my orthopedist).

He said it was a tendon injury and because they already did an MRI he didn’t want to do another one (???) so he sent me to physical therapy. He didn’t even offer a pair of crutches, I had to beg for them!!

I went to physical therapy from late April to late June and saw very little improve. I was able to walk without crutches the first week of June, but it was still very painful. I couldn’t stationary bike anymore and I relied on pool running alternating with swimming with a pulling block for my workouts (+ lifting).

Late June I went back to the Orthopedist and he discontinued my physical therapy because it wasn’t helping. He gave me until early July to feel better (as if it was my fault) and then when I didn’t, put me in a cast for the rest of the summer. This day wasn’t fun at all.

Over the course of the summer, I worked really hard to maintain my fitness in hopes of coming back for the Cross Country season but by the time the cast came off, the pain in both ankles was a reminder it was going to be a long time before I would run again.
